Angels Of Babylon: Kingdom of evil
29/01/10 || Smalley
From the band name, album name, and cover here, I was expecting to hear a big ol’ ball of cheese, but what I got was much less interesting than that. A pity, since a bit of musical cheese every now and then is welcome.
“Kingdom of evil” did have some auditory surprises in store for me, such as a surprising amount of synth work, church bell samples, a piano, orchestra strings, even fucken fiddles(!!!), but the underlying songwriting was all very average and unremarkable; I can’t recall any moment on this album that I’d point out as being catchy, entertaining, compelling, or most other positive adjectives you can think up.
The guitar sound here is disappointingly weak and punch-less, and while there are a few flashes of intensity with the drumming, it’s mostly just extremely standard beats on that front. Frontman David Fefolt’s classic rock-wannabe vocals are pretty sub-par, and slightly annoying as well, and while the guitar solos are real sweet, they don’t make the songwriting much more compelling in the end. And David Ellefson, nice to see you around again, but maybe you should just focus on working with F5? I’m not really a fan of that band either, but their music’s at least more interesting than what we have here.
Anyway, “Kingdom of evil” makes about as big an overall impression as an hour of elevator muzak would, and while there is some interesting stuff in here (you might even call them “risks”), in the end, “Kingdom” just isn’t a good album.
